It can be tough teaching figurative language! Some students just don't get it, but these posters make it a bit more fun! They realize that the words don't really make sense, so then they can learn the true meaning!
The posters below were drawn by students to play on words of similes, metaphors, analogies, cliches, and other forms of figurative language.

Another activity I have done with my students to help them differentiate between similes and metaphors is the Self-Portrait. They need to write about their eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and cheeks. They also need to identify whether they have written a simile or a metaphor.
This is a great activity to get students to write their own sentences AND correctly identify what type of sentence they have written. You can extend the activity by having the students draw a picture of what they look like with all of these characteristics.

This is great! I am 1st grade ELL teacher in a Title 1 school...so much children of poverty are really ELL too! It is so hard to get them to understand our tricky language. I like to get them to illustrate it too! Have your read the books "There's is a Frog in My Throat" and "My Momma Likes To Say"? They are great books to check out!
