Letters to Santa While Raising Money for Make-A-Wish!

Did you know the Make-A-Wish foundation grants a wish every 38 minutes? This organization has granted over 200,000 wishes since starting in 1980.

So what does this have to do with my little ol' teaching blog? Plenty! Read on.

Macy's is holding their 5th annual "Believe" campaign to help raise money for this great organization. Each student who writes a letter to Santa and gets it to Macy's by December 24th will get $1 donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Up to $1,000,000 will be donated! WOW!

I truly hope you'll consider having your students write letters to Santa and get them to a Macy's store! {Don't live near a Macy's? That's no excuse! I'm three hours from the nearest Macy's and I'm going to make sure mine get mailed there!}

Now I know some of you who teach older grades are thinking, "I can't do this with my students!" Not true! My 6th graders and I had a chat about this today. They agree that they're too old to write actual letters to Santa, but we discussed the spirit of Christmas and how they could write their "wishes" to Santa. One of my girls would like to wish away her mom's cancer, another asked for more peace in the world, while yet another asked for no one to be hungry this Christmas season. I think this would be a perfect alternative! My kids were super excited that they could help raise money for Make-A-Wish!

Looking for the nearest Macy's Santa mailbox? Just check here!

You can even track how many letters Macy's has received by clicking on the picture below!

With the huge Common Core push, this will fit nearly any writing standards!

Here's what to do!

1. If you're a blogger, create a blog post sharing the word about this great cause and link up below! If you want to give us a template to use or have any creative/fun ways to go about this, please share them! {Make sure to include a link back to this post, or yours will be deleted!}

2. If you don't blog, simply leave a comment letting me know that your class is participating!

3. Or simply share this post with other teachers you know who are able to participate. {I realize not all of our students celebrate Christmas, but I want those who do to know about this opportunity!} Please pin like crazy! =)

That's it! I truly hope you will consider participating in this great event!

Check out both of the websites below for even more information about these companies!

Don't forget to leave a comment if your class will be participating!

What a great idea! My 2nd graders write letters to Santa every year. I read a book called "Thank You, Santa". We talk about how Santa gets so many letters asking for things but how many write to say "thank you". They have to tell Santa about themselves & can only ask for 1 thing. A lot of them will choose "spirit if Christmas" ideas also. I will gladly take them to Macy's!

I LOVE the idea of writing a thank you! Hmmm - I might have to find a way to get my students thinking about that. The term "spirit of Christmas" is also something I need to remember to use! We are going to be writing our letters next week. Thanks for the ideas! I'm so glad your students will be participating!
